• Monday luncheon:   Our next Monday Luncheon is scheduled for June 17, 2013 at 12:00.  Ruralite will be our luncheon sponsor and 1910 Main-An American Bistro will be our caterer.   Our speaker will be the new Dean of the College of Business at Pacific University Dr.  Howard Smith.  A reminder that our lunch meetings are held at the Forest Grove Community Auditorium (1915 Main Street) and the cost is $10.00/members and $12.00/guests.

•  Homer Betancourt, a long-time member of our community, local business owner, family member, and friend was diagnosed with a rare but aggressive form of cancer in the bile ducts of his liver. The cancer then spread to other parts of his body. Without medical insurance, treatment is helping his body fight the cancer but at a large financial cost.

Small Business Grants As part of an ongoing initiative to promote small and new businesses, the City of Forest Grove announced today that it is partnering with the Portland Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to provide comprehensive business management training grants. Specifically, Forest Grove will be offering one to two $1,000 training grants that will enable a small business owner or manager to participate in the Small Business Development Management I program (SBM I).

The SBM I program, offered by the Portland region Small Business Development Center launches at Willow Creek at SW 185th Avenue and Baseline Road in Hillsboro on Wednesday, June 12, 4 to 7 pm and will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for 10 sessions.

A NEW FEATURE

The Friday flash will feature an article each month from one of the Chamber’s Board members to help you learn more about the make-up of our Board of Directors. Today’s article is by new Executive Director of the Forest Grove/Cornelius Chamber of Commerce- Howard Sullivan.

In the fall of 1976, I came to Forest Grove to attend Pacific University and played baseball for the Boxers.  I did not know that 37 years later I would still be here.  Upon my graduation from Pacific in the spring of 1979, I was hired by the Forest Grove School District and started at Neil Armstrong Jr. High in the fall of 1979.  After teaching there and Tom McCall, I moved to Forest Grove High School in the fall of 1997.

In my fifteen years at the high school, I taught numerous social studies classes, and served as the Activity Director and Leadership teacher.  I have been married for 34 years, this coming July, to my lovely wife LaDonna and I have two children Darci age 30 and Dylan age 24.  Darci is a Special Education teacher in the Sheridan School District and Dylan is finishing up his Master’s Degree at Pacific University this spring.  He is also entering the teaching field.  My wife and I reside in Forest Grove.

• May 18-19; Save the Music.  Six of our favorite musicians have volunteered their time and music to entertain you and raise funds to pay annual copyright fees so music can continue at Plum Hill.  $10 per person, per day or $15 per couple per day.

• Spring Release Wine Tasting at The Tasting Room at 1910 Main Street Saturday May 18^th Noon to 4pm.  Blizzard Wines a new vineyard will be joining us for this event. Please RSVP tasting@1910mainwine.com

• FOREST GROVE HIGH SCHOOL’S ANNUAL VIKING PLANT SALE If Spring has your green thumb twitching, mark your calendar for May 9-11 from 10 am to 5 pm each day in the greenhouses behind Forest Grove High School. Literally thousands of colorful annuals, potted plants and hanging baskets will be for sale.

A NEW FEATURE

The Friday flash will feature an article each month from one of the Chamber’s Board members to help you learn more about the make-up of our Board of Directors. Today’s article is by Board member Sophia Stamatis, Community Education Manager at the Tuality Center for Geriatric Psychiatry.

Seventeen years before the term “baby boomers” was in our vocabulary, Tuality Healthcare opened the only acute geriatric psychiatric hospital Oregon.  The first phase of the program was focused on outpatient services.

Today, with three fulltime on site psychiatrists, Tuality can offer both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment in a positive and supportive environment to assist patients in achieving their optimal level of functioning.

Referrals to Tuality Center for Geriatric Psychiatry are available via phone 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Admissions are accepted 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Following the Screening, a determination is made by he attending psychiatrist as to whether the prospective patient meets the level of acuity for the impatient program.

Reinecker Nursery is looking for a mature delivery person (man or woman) to deliver flowers primarily to Bend and Redmond two days a week.  Something like Tuesdays and Thursdays, days could be somewhat flexible.  There are also local (Portland/Vancouver area) deliveries available for a third day of the week if someone wanted another day.  You would drive a Chevy or GMC stretch van towing a 10’ trailer.  The vans are loaded here and there would be help to unload at the delivery site.  Usual departure time is 6 to 6:30 am.  No special license is needed.  They would like someone with immediate availability, starting next week if possible.  The position would last through May and June.  If Interested please call Mike at 503-357-5106

• MERCY CORPS NW SMALL BUSINESS TRAINING  Working with partners in Forest Grove and Hillsboro, MercyCorps NW will be bringing their small business services to Washington County. The Foundations “Get your business started the right way” is a six week course that covers the essentials needed to start a small business, and business plan requirements.  The class is Wednesdays 4-7 pm (except July 3^rd) June 5^th to July 17^th at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, 5193 NE Elam Young Parkway. • A GREAT OPPORTUNITY!  The Big Sky Conference is holding their conference Track and Field Championships here in Forest Grove at Pacific University on May 7 thru May 11.  The Chamber is getting phone calls from as far away as South Dakota inquiring about our town, motels and restaurants.  This is a heads up that this track meet can be a real boon for our town. Portland State University is the hosting school and they are coming to Forest Grove because they do not have an adequate venue for this conference meet.  The facility at Pacific University and Lincoln Park meets all of their requirements and will bring a lot of people to our town.  Let’s be ready!

As you can see by the new heading, the Forest Grove Chamber Board of Directors has changed our name to the Forest Grove/Cornelius Chamber of Commerce.  We will be welcoming our Cornelius business neighbors to our combined chamber as we conduct a membership drive in the coming weeks.

• HENNINGSEN COLD STORAGE and Norpac Foods have reached an agreement to construct a 26,000 square-foot frozen food storage and distribution facility in Salem, Oregon.  Henningsen Cold Storage Company is one of the largest refrigerated warehousing companies in the U.S. with nine facilities in six states providing more than 42 million cubic feet of temperature controlled storage. Norpac is a cooperative owned by 240 family famers in the Willamette Valley, which provides frozen and canned vegetables and fruit for retail, remanufacture and export markets.
